How's that for a title? Lawyer Raymond Burr (seeming very much like Perry Mason) brilliantly defends Angela Lansbury, who seems certain to be found guilty of murdering her husband, who was Burr's best friend! Instead of spoiling it for you, I'll just say that a couple of surprises lie ahead for him. It's a wonder this film was allowed to become p.d. Don't miss it. |
Also appearing are Dick Foran, John Dehner, Lamont Johnson, and Denver Pyle.

Raymond Burr’s personal life was well concealed by his television producer Gail Patrick. Still, despite his excellent acting, those puffy eyes and heavy figure portrayed a sexual deviant. He could have no more played the love interest of baby-faced, hour-glass figured Angela Lansbury, than Rock Hudson could have gotten over as the paramour for Doris Day.
No, it seemed that Burr was more fixated on his old Gunnery Sergeant than he ever was on Angela. Raymond Burr would have gladly heard a fat boy fart than a pretty girl sing. If you can get past the smell, it’s not a real bad movie. The acting was quite good! In fact, it almost convinced me. But truth is stranger than fiction Judgy Wudgy! Nyuk Nyuk Nyuk!

John Dehner played an attorney in the courtroom. He was Palladin in Have Gun Will Travel on radio. And he played good and bad guys in radio Gunsmoke. Ray Burr was OK in this movie.

I was hoping for a good old noir, but all I found was a positively stultifying exercise in mid-50s filmmaking. Raymond Burr has an utterly humorless, dull, and incredible character to inhabit, and he does so with the opposite of gusto. Angela Lansbury continually appears surprised to be up for a scene.
This film makes any Perry Mason episode seem a towering achievement of modern American cinema by comparison. It is ultimately forgettable.

Leaden dialog, dark print, and an implausible story make this a turkey. The Revere tape recorder whose operation was so carefully demonstrated had as much personality as the laconic Burr and matronly Lansbury. I don't know why I sat through the whole thing.

Similar to several film noir movies I have watched, Raymond Burr training for the Perry Mason TV show. A nice twist in the second half of the movie. After watching every episode of murder she wrote, it was a nice change of pace to see Angela Lansbury as a nasty piece of work. and she was pretty good looking as well

Amidst the current *who's-dunnits* so refreshing to watch. Of course actors like Raymond Burr and Angela Lansbury, then at the start of their long and successful careers *quarantee* a movie worth watching.

A fast paced murder mystery. Lamont Johnson and John Dehner are an excellent supporting cast to leads Angela Lansbury and Raymond Burr. Both of the latter turn in excellent performances. A good plot from start to finish. Well worth viewing.

Very enjoyable. Raymond Burr is a little restrained for my taste, almost flat. He was never a favorite of mine. But he was OK. Angela Lansbury on the other hand was fabulous. I love her in these kinds of parts. Nice film nori viewing. The sound is not that great...keeps going in and out.

This is a wonderful movie, which I enjoyed very much. Raymond Burr and Angela Lansbury were both excellent, as were supporting players Foran, Dehner and Pyle who all guest starred on the Perry Mason series in later years. When this film was made, the beautiful Angela Lansbury was only 25 years old. Raymond Burr, handsome and intense, was 33. I downloaded the 512kb Mpeg4, which was fine for audio and picture. Thank you for making this available. I thought I would never have the opportunity to see this film and was overjoyed to find it here.

An absorbing story and top notch performance from the actors, make this movie enjoyable. Although not a mystery per se, the story does contain plot elements which keep the viewer in suspense to the end.
This one should be remade. It is much better the drivel which is common in cinema today. 5 stars for this well played drama which keeps something up its sleeve to the end.

This is a very enjoyable story of love and intrigue, with a fascinating twist at the end. A real potboiler, although the sound at some points was not quite as clear as would be desired; even so, this film is definitely worth watching, and Lansbury is quite beautiful in her role.

Both Burr & Lansbury were superb in a great noir film. It is easy to see this film influence Burr's casting as Perry Mason shortly afterwards and Lansbury;s darkness foreshadowed her role The Manchurian Candidate.

Interesting plot with Landsbury as a femme fatal and a very good one at that! Burr was also entertaining as the duped lover. You know what they say about pay back! I'm sure Burr's role here landed him the Mason spot. This is lots of fun!

No one has mentioned the cool Angela Lansbury role here, which is notable, since both this movie and Life At Stake could possibly have helped her garner her dark role in Manchurian Candidate. Since this was before Perry Mason, it is an invalid argument to say that he's just playing Perry Mason. Besides that, he's got a libido in this film, which Perry didn't have much of. You can also see this movie on your Roku player (Moonlight Movies). Excellent forgotten film.

billbarstad is a little too hard to please. This movie IS good.
The actor's are all good in their parts. (I will say though, the artist is a little young to be paired with the woman he is paired with.)
I thought the defense attorney's summation at the trial was unbelievable and melodramatic. And, the main plot of the story is "soap opera".
But, overall it was good. The movie moves along quite well and it is not over long like many of these PD films.
I don't think you will be disappointed.

Subject: First Rate, Minus
This film is First Rate; but it seems to have been treated as something less, because it was not very well preserved, yet close enough to make the grade of an excellent half of a Friday night matinee at home, alone with Tabby Cat Mieux. You should not regret spending your hour with PMM -- and seeing that it's where Raymond Burr finally found his forte, the experience is well worth it indeed. Not going to say a word more!

Raymond Burr plays a very Perry Mason character in this unremarkable melodrama. I watched through to the end just to see how the twist in the plot worked out. I wasn't surprised.
I downloaded the MPEG1 file. The video track is fine, though there are many missing frames. The audio track varies, but is of poor quality overall.
